Biography

Hello, my name is Brian Birch.  I am the Physical Education teacher here at Benson West Elementary. Go Bulldogs!! I am currently in my third year at Benson West, and 7th year overall working in the Omaha Public Schools District. I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education K-12 as well as a Coaching Endorsement in 7-12. I have been running the Intramural Programs here at Benson West for the last three years and love working with our student athletes. I have previously coached at the high school and middle school level as well.  

 

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, golfing, music, working in my garage, Husker & Viking football, college basketball, and grilling.

At Home Activities for PE

Mr. Birch here! We miss you boys and girls so much. It is such a crazy time right now! Please stay safe and lets all take care of each other by doing what we can to protect each other. Nevertheless, get up and get off the couch and be active for at least 30 to 60 minutes per day, it will make you feel better by moving around. Here are some ideas and activities for you and your family to do while we are quarantined at home. Please reach out to me by my email above you have any questions or need additional activities for you and yours!

Science shows that physical activity helps memory and thinking. Exercise and or physical activity also improves mood, sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety. 

MOVEMENT/EXERCISE OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES 

  • DAILY FAMILY WALKS OR PLAYTIME 
  • GET OUTSIDE!! 
  • Take daily walks around your neighborhood your family, play in your yard or somewhere close to where you live. 
  • Get active for at least 30 minutes per day!! 
  • 2nd-5th Grade- Run your laps, do your daily stretches, and do your daily dynamic warmup outside your house or in-place inside your house. 
  • Kindergarten and 1st Grade- Do your daily warmup like we do in class
    • Jumping Jacks, Box Jumps, Side to Side, Opposites, Criss-Cross, Walk, Jog, Run, Skip, Hop, Crab Walk, Bear Crawl, Gallop, Backwards, Backwards Hop, etc.. 
  • Get your blood pumping and have fun one way or another with the equipment you have access to.
